Why is British telly almost depressive either during weekend nights and Christmas days?
…is it because the lads and lasses at the top realise who will be at home (and who will not) during the times stated. One example of this is the Saturday night dross from National Lottery type programmes to ‘karaoke’ and programmes they presume the ‘lower classes’ (socio-economic C2DE’s who cannae afford to go out) will watch – not forgetting the perpetual repeats of Only Fools & Horses. Christmas this year has so far been murder for daytime telly…which makes me suspect the only time the BBC, ITV etc will get back to normal with half-decent programmes will be in the new year, when the ABC1′s have had their fill of outside activities (be they in the UK or elsewhere in our wee globe). ‘Little Britain’ showing number 574, anyone…
Taz…forgive me – I have the full Sky monty, I’m afraid, and experienced the overdose of ‘Peckham’ when my sister came over from the US…where she’s lived for 5 years now (she recorded them all on cd and returned late last month) – but you can only have so much…can’t you?
See on one of the Sky channels last night (Dec 24) – so said Radio Times, a programme called ‘The Hardest Pub In The UK’ was being shown…nice to know people who can’t afford to go out can watch & learn on what to do to come the New Year when they actually do return to pubs and clubs as they either get their low-paid first wage of the year, or their first DHSS payment.

I find the BBC depressing all of the time and, I can not help but wonder why they need all those extra channels that are not broadcasting most of the time yet,we the licence fee payers are having to finance these channels out of our hard earned cash.
Its about time the BBC was called to account at a general public meeting and one where we can have the chance to force change.

Absolutely agree. Fools and Horses can only be funny so many times, bless ‘em.
Yes, I believe it is also tied to socio-economic indicators as well-w which is very sad.
Yes, I find UK tv in general very depressing and I feel that it tends to shape society that way rather than being a reflection on it- which in my view is Crap- because we should be getting as many positive (even if they are fantasy and fiction) in our lives to relieve some of the nasty burdens of reality.
We all need some joy in our lives- otherwise we’ll all feel as miserable as the weather!
God Bless on this Christmas my Yahoo friend, Peace, Hope Joy and Goodwill to All!

Apart from "Only Fools & Horses", I would have to agree with you – but that sums up TV all year round, not just Christmas. "Only Fools…" is a fantastic programme to be savoured again & again (you should be glad you don’t have UKTV Gold – it’s on all the time).
