How long can an Oscar be kept in a 15 gallon tank till it gets stunned?
I have an 125 gallon tank with some other cichlids in it but they are all about 4-5 and the only Oscars I can find at the petstores are like 1 inch. And I know if I put one in there All my cichlids would kill it. I have an 15 gallon tank with nothing in it and I was thinking about buying an Oscar and let it grow to like 5 inches. Will the Oscar get stunned growing before it gets to 5 inches?

Depends on filtration and how often you do water changes. More filtration+lots of water changes = good water quality = no ammonia and no/low nitrates = no stunted growth.

I would leave the oscar in there until around 3 or 4 inches max, and that’s only if you do 30-40% water changes every 1 or 2 days. 30-40% would be enough to keep the water clean, but will not be so much that your bacteria bed will be damaged. I’m not sure what kind of cichlids you have in your 125g, but your oscar at 3" should be fine with a 4-5" fish as long as it’s able to run and hide somewhere. I have a 4.5" oscar with five 1.5" convicts and nothing has happened after 2 months. My convicts even laid eggs and successfully defended against the oscar twice.

One of the spawns from the convicts here(unfertilized): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4M9U1Iyvk0&feature=channel_page

Good luck :D

It may not grow to 5" in that tank, although you may be able to get it that big with very good tank care.

The limiting factors to fish growth are water quality, oxygen levels and food.

So overfilter the small tank, change more water more often, and run extra bubble wands. That will keep the fish healthy and eating well.

Monitor the water quality and watch how the fish grows. If you cant maintain the water quality, or the fish stops growing, then it’s time for a bigger tank.

Stunting is a long term thing. If you left him in there for a year and he only grew to 5", then he would be considered stunted, and probably be pretty sickly. If he’s there for 4 months and grows to 4", then his growth slows and you move him out, no harm done.

Hopefully he will be big enough to look after himself in the big tank then.

if the tank is too small they will get a little hole in thier skull. it is fine if it isnt there for too long.
