was this a right thing to do, or should i have minded my own business?
i was at this restaurant, and i had this waitress that was being hit on by this group of guys. the waitress looked like she was in her late 20s, and the group of guys looked like they were in their late teens. anyways, they were hitting on her, saying inappropriate things, and they were touching her etc. she looked really uncomfortable, and kept telling them to ‘cool it’, but they persisted.

long story short, my friends and i stuck up for her, called her over to our table and asked her if she was alright, and told her to tell the manager. i’m not sure if she did, but my friends and i did though. we saw the manager talk to her, and she kept looking over at me shooting me dirty looks.

so my question is, was that the right thing to do, or should i have minded my own business? there were other people in the restaurant that noticed and were uncomfortable about it too.
thanks, tim yu (:
thank you all (:

I think you did the right thing. Most people would be too scared or too uncaring to do anything! props to you young lady for having the cajones to stand up for someone. But the whole…dirty look thing…I think that woman just wanted no trouble. Sigh. At least there are good people out there like you.

You did the right thing but most people that you stood up don’t want any trouble. Thats why they don’t speak up. If she spoke up to her manager then her manager would yell at her instead. You should’ve stopped it with just calling her over. Keep calling her over if you want but keep it between you and the waitress.

Thing is, managers are usually f*cking *ssholes. They don’t really care about their employee but only care about their consumers. If their employee getting touched and being hit will get them more business, then the manager wouldn’t really care. If you want to complain to anyone, its not the manager. But like the committee that protect employee from being abused. But then the waitress might lose her job afterwards.

There are some things you should do and some things you shouldn’t do even if its the "right" thing to do.

Conclusion, good job for standing up because a lot of people wouldn’t do that. But was it the "right" thing to do? No not really. You did what you wanted to do and not what would benefit the waitress the most. Getting the waitress out of that scenario is the best thing you could’ve and should’ve done. Anything after is not your business.

I think that was very brave, courageous thing to do
that was nice of you to stand u for someone you didn’t know
she might not appreciated it or not until she realizes
but what you did was the right thing to do and you should feel proud of yourself

i think you did the right thing
she was obviously uncomfortable and she probably appreciated that you helped even though maybe the manager wasn’t too happy about it
and maybe she wasn’t giving you dirty looks, but of course i wasn’t there so i couldn’t be sure

anyway, don’t feel bad. you did something that most people wouldn’t have the guts to do, considering most people in the restaurant didn’t do anything

No, you shouldn’t have minded your own business; bystanders refusing to get involved, saying "it’s nothing to do with me" is exactly why these boys feel like they can get away with harassing people like that. The thing is, generally just having someone with enough guts to say something to them about their behavior will make them realize that they’ve gone too far. If they continue after someone says something, then you can talk to the manager, but leave the waitress’s feelings out of your complaint. It’s "They’re harassing the waitress and it’s making me uncomfortable. I asked them to stop, and they didn’t. Will you please take care of it?"
If the waitress didn’t actually get in trouble, perhaps she was expecting a tip from the boys that they wouldn’t leave if they got kicked out, so she ended up enduring that treatment for nothing. Maybe people who see her enduring that misbehavior tend to tip extra to try to make up for it.
I still feel like doing anything to try to curb that kind of behavior is better than doing nothing, hoping that someone else will say something, unwittingly putting forth your silent approval. The more people speak against inappropriate behaviors, the less willing people will be to risk engaging in those behaviors against the possibility of being called out on them.
